Le Sacre Du Printemps - Jagden und Formen
Sacre - Jagden und Formen, september 2013
The first part of the show with Sasha Waltz & Guests was "Jagden und Formen" (Zustand 2008 - Wolfgang Rihm) with an orchestra on stage. As often in contemporary music there is a lot of percussion in this piece, but here is also an amplified guitar and bass in the score. The piece opens with 2 violins walking around on stage and in the midel of the piece the English horns player is picked up by the dancers while playing. The second part of the evening was "Le Sacre du printemps" in the orchestral pit. During the break, the stage needed to be cleared. The entire orchestra and microphone setup had to be gone in about 20 minutes.

First Part
Since we had to do a really quick change, we decided to hang most of the microphones on motorized fly bars. Only the Bass (Neumann U87) and the amps (Royer R121 & EV RE20) were on small stands. The harp and piano were recorded with 3 DPA 4061 and a Sennheiser transmitter inside the instruments. Also the 2 walking violins, the English horn and the clarinet had a transmitter. For the orchestra we hang several Schoeps MK4 with active cables above the orchestra.
On the proscenium we had 4 hyper-cardio Schoeps and Neumann directional boundary layer to have some of the sounds produced by the dancers and as a backup for the walking musicians.
Second Part
Since microphone setup has to be discreet for the video recording and live audience, we cannot make a classical Decca Tree setup. We choose to setup 4 DPA 4006 on the string sections Violin 1, Violin 2, Alti and celli with 2 Schoeps MK2 fill ins in a large (5m-6m) spaced paire. Double Basses had a M149, woodwinds were all Schoeps, Brass section Sennheiser MKH40. Percussion was recorded with KM 184, DPA 4006 and AKG C414.
In the hall we installed another 2 spaced pairs of Schoeps MK2 and AKG C414 to color the sound and to send to the surround channels.
All 44 Microphones were send to a Protools HD system with an optical MADI stream on Crockwood and Optocore preamps. The Optocore system in the Opera house is used as audio network for recording and to run the live shows. All sources can be used for the show and recorded simultaneously via the MADI stream.

Recording Cosi fan tutte
Audio
The Recording of "Cosi fan tutte" (Mozart) was rather a traditional setup for the orchestra pit. With a total of 36 Microphones on our standard Crockwood and Optocore preamps.
Because of visibility we did not install the standard Decca Tree but 4 omni (DPA) on the string sections Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola and celli. The Double Bass was recorded with a U87. On the Woodwinds there was a couple of Schoeps MK2 and a Sennheiser MKH40 on the Horns. The Trumpets had a AKG C414 and the timpani a DPA 4006. On the Pianoforte we installed a pair of Neumann KM184.
because the set was very open and deep we had to hide some DPA 4061 Microphone in the set,
in adition to the proscenium of Schoeps MK4V and Schoeps MSTC (ORTF), all on stands in the pit. Since it was a small orchestra the position of these microphones in the pit was not a big problem for spill of the orchestral sound in the vocal microphones. Some hypercardiode microphones (Schoeps & Neumann) were hidden on stage for the choir that was singing upstage.

Recording "Lucrezia Borgia"
This Opera was performed at the Royal Circus of Brussels.
Since the orchestra was behind the singers, we needed to enhance the sound with a live amplification. This was done with 2 digico Mixing Desks and a d&b line array system.
Pictures on Facebook
In the orchestra we installed multiple Schoeps MK4 on the Strings and woodwinds. And Neumann KM184 and AKG C414 on the Brass and Percussion. All Microphones were relatively close miced to reduce feedback. On the Double Bass we installed the Neumann D1 Digital large Diaphragm Microphone and a U87. For the recording we had a decca tree of digital Neumann KM133 with sphere. These have an incredible natural sound and dynamics. There is no noise at all!
The Madi output of the digico was linked to an OBvan with another Digico desk and mixed live for radio distribution.
